to the Track: A New Workout &amp; A New Sports Drink"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As most of you know, two weeks ago I ran my first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/north-face-50-mile-recap\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">50-mile race<\/a>.\u00a0 Recovery took a little longer than planned when I got sick for almost a week afterward.\u00a0 I hadn&#8217;t been sick in years, but given the exertion (and the heat) of that day, I guess it&#8217;s not all that surprising that my immune system was weakened.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-31690\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/g-natural-small.jpg\" alt=\"Gatorade G2 on a black background\" width=\"191\" height=\"273\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/g-natural-small.jpg 373w, https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/g-natural-small-210x300.jpg 210w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 191px) 100vw, 191px\" \/>I eased back into training with a relaxed week, the most difficult workout of which was a new one at the track that I did for the first time.\u00a0 I also tried out\u00a0 new product, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gatorade.com\/default.aspx#g-series-natural\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gatorade G2 Natural<\/a> (yep, high-fructose-free Gatorade).<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s all you need to know about each.<\/p>\n<h2>A Speed Workout Built for Marathoners<\/h2>\n<p>I&#8217;ve written about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/track-workouts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">track workouts<\/a> before, and this one isn&#8217;t too different from the mile repeats I explained in that post.\u00a0 But while that focused on speed&#8212;only three mile-repeats at a very fast pace&#8212;this one feels more appropriate for endurance training.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s simple: Run a mile at your 5K pace.\u00a0 Rest for two laps (jogging recommended, walking okay).\u00a0 Repeat.<\/p>\n<p>Shoot for four of them at first, and work your way up to six (or eight, which is what a guy who I ran with did.\u00a0 He was featured in Runner&#8217;s World this month!)<\/p>\n<p>It doesn&#8217;t sound terribly exciting or fun, but the stuff that works never is.\u00a0 Two laps of rest seems like a lot, but these miles will wear you down.\u00a0 After four of these at 6:20 pace, I was finished.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll blame the 50 and the illness and try again next week.<\/p>\n<h2>New Gatorade G\/G2 Natural<\/h2>\n<p>Don&#8217;t deny it.\u00a0 You kind of snicker (like I do) when you see runners drinking Gatorade.<\/p>\n<p>I like Gatorade.\u00a0 It tastes good.\u00a0 But until recently, it has been a convenience store treat or a hangover-killer, not a sports drink.<\/p>\n<p>But then Gatorade came out with the G Series.\u00a0 Designed for optimal performance, not for pairing with beef jerky and Doritos.\u00a0 Specifically targeted for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/post-workout-recovery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pre-workout, during-workout, or recovery<\/a>.\u00a0 And no more high-fructose corn syrup.<\/p>\n<p>Now Gatorade has gone one step farther (presumably to please the all the whack-jobs like us who really pay attention to ingredient lists!).\u00a0 The new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gatorade.com\/default.aspx#g-series-natural\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">G Natural and G2 Natural<\/a> boast all-natural ingredients.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>G2 Natural:<\/strong> Water, sucrose, dextrose, citric acid, natural flavor, sea salts (sodium chloride, potassium chloride), sodium citrate, beta carotene.<\/p>\n<p><strong>G2 Natural Low-Calorie:<\/strong> Water, sucrose, erythritol, citric acid, natural flavor, sea salts (sodium chloride, potassium chloride), sodium citrate, vegetable juice, Reb A (PureVia).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Sure, it&#8217;s not <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/vega-sport\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vega Sport<\/a>, but come on, this is pretty good for Gatorade.\u00a0 Those -oses are just sugars, nothing to be afraid of if you&#8217;re working out hard.\u00a0 The G2 Natural has a few ingredients that might raise red flags: <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Erythritol\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">erythiritol<\/a>, which is a sugar alcohol, and Reb A, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/stevia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">stevia<\/a>-derived sweetener.\u00a0 Both are used to replace sugar in the G2, which is the low-calorie version.\u00a0 (I still don&#8217;t really get the idea behind low-calorie sports drinks anyway, unless the sole purpose is to rehydrate and replenish electrolytes.\u00a0 When I drink a sports drink, I do it <em>for<\/em> the sugar and calories.)<\/p>\n<p>Gatorade sent me one bottle of each to try out and review.\u00a0 I really enjoyed the G Natural, which tasted only slightly more medicinal than regular Gatorade.\u00a0 I drank it during my track workout and it certainly did the job of satisfying the thirst (Gatorade&#8217;s still &#8220;for that deep down body thirst,&#8221; right?)<\/p>\n<p>The G2 Natural tasted sort of like regular Gatorade, but it had that easily-identifiable stevia aftertaste, so I didn&#8217;t like it nearly as much.\u00a0 But I suppose if low-cal is your thing, then this would be a pretty good one.\u00a0 (If that&#8217;s the case though, you might want to consider reading a different blog.)<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re interested in trying G\/G2 Natural, they&#8217;re only available at select Whole Foods stores right now; you can see which ones on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gatorade.com\/default.aspx#product?s=g-natural\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gatorade&#8217;s website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So that&#8217;s it!\u00a0 New workout.\u00a0 New sports drink.\u00a0 Not sick anymore.\u00a0 Registered for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vermont50.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vermont 50-miler<\/a> in September and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinemarathon.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"
