{"id":9795,"date":"2010-06-16T09:06:49","date_gmt":"2010-06-16T13:06:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/?p=9795"},"modified":"2020-04-14T10:48:57","modified_gmt":"2020-04-14T14:48:57","slug":"how-to-find-time-to-train","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/how-to-find-time-to-train\/","title":{"rendered":"The One Thing You Must Do to Find the Time to Train"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Read for 15 minutes in the morning when you&#8217;d otherwise check email.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>That was the nugget I took away from an interesting post I read yesterday about how to fit reading into a busy schedule.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-31667\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/HiRes.jpg\" alt=\"Image of man running against the clock\" width=\"269\" height=\"285\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/HiRes.jpg 1932w, https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/HiRes-283x300.jpg 283w, https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/HiRes-768x814.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/HiRes-966x1024.jpg 966w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 269px) 100vw, 269px\" \/>Coincidentally, I had already done that yesterday.\u00a0 And I did it again today.\u00a0 (Seth Godin&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Linchpin-Are-Indispensable-Seth-Godin\/dp\/1591843162\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1276692930&amp;sr=8-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Linchpin<\/em><\/a>; I highly recommend it.)<\/p>\n<p>It works.\u00a0 15 minutes spent doing something worthwhile instead of doing something worthless goes a long way to making you feel great all day.<\/p>\n<h3>Tricks to Help You Find Time<\/h3>\n<p>I like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zenhabits.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">productivity blogs<\/a>, especially when they&#8217;re about creating meaning, not just efficiency.\u00a0 Sometimes I wish NMA was one of these blogs.<\/p>\n<p>But an interesting thing happened when I tried to pretend today.\u00a0 As I attempted to write a list of easy ways to find time for running (or whatever &#8220;training&#8221; is for you), I realized that this approach missed something big.<\/p>\n<p>I could suggest a lot of little tricks, many of them applicable to finding time for anything, not just running.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/vegetarian-diet-athletes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eat cleaner<\/a> so you have more energy and need less sleep.\u00a0 Stop watching <em>America&#8217;s Got Talent<\/em>.\u00a0 (I&#8217;d have used <em>Lost<\/em>,<a href=\"https:\/\/tv.winelibrary.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Gary Vaynerchuk<\/a>&#8216;s favorite example, if it weren&#8217;t over.)\u00a0 Stop checking email, Facebook, and Twitter so much.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a lot of time in most people&#8217;s day that isn&#8217;t particularly relaxing or productive, and that&#8217;s time you could use for running, which at its best is both.<\/p>\n<p>Running-specifically, you could get a headlamp and run at night, if that&#8217;s the only chance you have.\u00a0 Or multitask with your running time: You can <a href=\"https:\/\/zenhabits.net\/the-zen-of-running-and-10-ways-to-make-it-work-for-you\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">meditate<\/a>, brainstorm, socialize, or listen to a book on tape while you run (this is one I actually do).<\/p>\n<p>All of these can help.\u00a0 But every single one of them <strong>misses the big point<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>That point?<\/p>\n<h3>You have to make training a &#8220;must.&#8221;\u00a0 Only then will you do it consistently.<\/h3>\n<p>There are shoulds and there are musts.\u00a0 Shoulds might get done, musts <em>will<\/em> get done.<\/p>\n<p>So how do you make running a must? How do you make sure you do it when there are a million other things screaming for your attention?<\/p>\n<p>Running has to become a part of you.\u00a0 You have to become a runner.\u00a0 Running needs to be the 10% automatic deduction from your paycheck that goes into a 401k.\u00a0 It has to be non-negotiable.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve heard that people who exercise continually for six months become addicted to it and the chances of ever stopping tend to zero.\u00a0 It becomes a habit.<\/p>\n<p>A part of you.\u00a0 A must.<\/p>\n<h3>How to Make Running a Must<\/h3>\n<p>Willpower isn&#8217;t usually enough.\u00a0 It works for a while, then it dies out.<\/p>\n<p>If that&#8217;s the case, what do you?<\/p>\n<p>You make running a must by taking an action that commits you.\u00a0 For me, it&#8217;s as simple as signing up for a race.\u00a0 When I&#8217;ve paid actual money for something, it becomes painful and embarrassing not to train for it.<\/p>\n<p>Another way to commit is to tell everyone you know that you&#8217;re going to complete that 10K, that marathon, or that Ironman.\u00a0 What if you printed up business cards <em>promising <\/em>you&#8217;d do something and handed them out to the people you love and respect the most?<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s scary to do this.\u00a0 If you slack off, you look really, really dumb.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;ve read this far, you realize that&#8217;s exactly the point.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s how you make running a must.\u00a0 Once that&#8217;s done, finding time is the easy part.<\/p>\n<p>How do <strong>you<\/strong> make running a must?<\/p>\n<p><em>This post is part of a series on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/motivation-secret\/\">motivation for running<\/a>.\u00a0 Check out the rest!<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Read for 15 minutes in the morning when you&#8217;d otherwise check email.
