{"id":9678,"date":"2010-06-10T12:01:26","date_gmt":"2010-06-10T16:01:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/?p=9678"},"modified":"2020-02-27T16:28:26","modified_gmt":"2020-02-27T21:28:26","slug":"3-things-to-try","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/3-things-to-try\/","title":{"rendered":"3 Fitness Experiments I&#039;m Dying to Try"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>First, thank you for all the congratulations and kind words about my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/north-face-50-mile-recap\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">50-miler<\/a>!\u00a0 I sincerely hope you all got the message that it&#8217;s something I really believe you could do, if that&#8217;s what you decided you wanted.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m no great runner.\u00a0 I absolutely hated running until I got to college, and even when I did decide to run a marathon, I couldn&#8217;t stay healthy and it took me almost five hours the first time.\u00a0 Nothing wrong with that, but there are people who break three hours or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/boston-marathon-qualifying\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">qualify for Boston<\/a> in their first marathon.<\/p>\n<p>My point is just that I&#8217;m not a &#8220;natural,&#8221; and fortunately, the thrill of accomplishing this stuff isn&#8217;t reserved for &#8220;naturals.&#8221;\u00a0 I&#8217;ve had to work my butt off to do it, and you can do the same thing if it&#8217;s worth it to you and you <strong>decide<\/strong> to.<\/p>\n<h2>3 New Experiments<\/h2>\n<p>Training for the 50 took a lot of work.\u00a0 It also took a lot of being careful.\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t want to try anything new, for fear that the slightest injury or change in diet might make hauling ass for 50 miles impossible.\u00a0 (Or at least miserable.)<\/p>\n<p>So here they are, the three new things I&#8217;m really excited about that I just couldn&#8217;t do during that preparation time for fear of screwing something up.<\/p>\n<h3>1. Strength training.<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/mountain-athlete-workout\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lifting weights<\/a> was something I intended to do in preparation for the 50.\u00a0 But after I procrastinated for a few weeks on getting started, I didn&#8217;t want to introduce it so late into the training.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-31715 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/news_vbb_book.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"224\" height=\"336\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/news_vbb_book.jpg 383w, https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/news_vbb_book-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 224px) 100vw, 224px\" \/>While I&#8217;m not so sure it&#8217;s worth it for most road races, I&#8217;m coming to believe that having more strength to power up those hills would &#8220;outweigh&#8221; the cost of carrying around a few extra pounds of muscle.\u00a0 Some of the dudes at the front of the pack during this race were straight-up <em>jacked<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve been reading Robert Cheeke&#8217;s new book, <em>Vegan Bodybuilding and Fitness<\/em> (he sent me an autographed copy!).\u00a0 I have no interest in building muscle just for the sake of building muscle, but I have found the information about how to do so on a vegan diet really useful (and inspiring).<\/p>\n<p>I think posting pictures from my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/north-face-50-mile-recap\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">race recap<\/a> sent some family members into a tizzy thinking I&#8217;m too thin.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t really care about this, because I feel better than I&#8217;ve ever felt, but I do think I&#8217;m on the low end of where I should be.\u00a0 I think a focus on strength training and some corresponding changes to my diet might make a big difference in my running.<\/p>\n<h3>2. A liquid cleanse.<\/h3>\n<p>I realize that drinking only liquids for five or ten days would be counterproductive with #1.\u00a0 It will surely cause me to lose a little more weight, and I won&#8217;t dare do it until I&#8217;ve put back on the weight I lost during the 50.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-31664 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/519G19TH9CL.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"193\" height=\"292\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/519G19TH9CL.jpg 331w, https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/519G19TH9CL-199x300.jpg 199w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 193px) 100vw, 193px\" \/>But I can&#8217;t deny that I find the energizing promises of the alkaline diet (which I&#8217;ve been reading about in the <em>pH Miracle<\/em>) fascinating.\u00a0 I&#8217;m sure some people will criticize this, whether silently or with a comment.\u00a0 But I&#8217;ve decided that the alkaline diet (and a cleanse that accompanies it) is something worth investigating, at the very least.<\/p>\n<p>Am I embarrassed that it&#8217;s kind of new-agey?\u00a0 Not really.\u00a0 Guys whose opinions I really respect, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tonyrobbins.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tony Robbins<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brendanbrazier.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brendan Brazier<\/a>, are advocates for paying attention to alkalinity in your diet.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d be embarrassed about completely buying into something like this and throwing all skepticism to the wind.\u00a0 But I&#8217;d also be embarrassed about dismissing something completely just because it seems a little out there and there&#8217;s not much evidence to support it yet.\u00a0 Lots of ideas that we now consider self-evident started out as heretical ideas that the establishment violently opposed.<\/p>\n<p>As long as I become convinced that it&#8217;s not dangerous, I think I owe it to myself to try anything once, and to evaluate it based on results, not speculation.<\/p>\n<p>To learn more about the whole alkaline thing, check out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alkalinesisters.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alkaline Sisters<\/a>, one of the blogs whose ad I&#8217;m featuring (for free) in the sidebar this month.<\/p>\n<h3>3. Running trails in Vibram Fivefingers.<\/h3>\n<p>This one will probably be less controversial: I want to start running <em>real <\/em>trails in my <a href=\"https:\/\/us.vibram.com\/shop\/fivefingers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vibram Fivefingers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Right now I do track workouts in my Vibrams, and occasionally a run on a gravel trail near my house in them.\u00a0 But for the most primal, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/lieberman-persistence-hunting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">connected-with-my-running-roots<\/a> experience possible, I want to wear them on the hardcore trails in the woods.\u00a0 I want to run through mud in them, cross streams in them, and feel every rock under my foot in them.<\/p>\n<p>It will probably hurt a little.\u00a0 I might bruise the ball of my foot when I step on a big rock and have to take a few days off.\u00a0 But my next 50-miler isn&#8217;t until late September, so I can afford to take this small risk.<\/p>\n<p>Other Vibram notes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Erica from <a href=\"https:\/\/itzyskitchen.blogspot.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Itzy&#8217;s Kitchen<\/a> sent me this article about an increased frequency of <a href=\"https:\/\/running.competitor.com\/2010\/05\/features\/the-barefoot-running-injury-epidemic_10118\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">barefoot running injuries<\/a> that are popping up in doctors&#8217; offices.\u00a0 Surely part of it is due simply to the fact that <em>more people are running barefoot or in the VFF&#8217;s<\/em>, but still the article has some interesting perspectives.<\/li>\n<li><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-31702 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/large.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"278\" height=\"228\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/large.jpg 508w, https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/large-300x246.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 278px) 100vw, 278px\" \/>My wife, Erin, just got a pair of the new <a href=\"https:\/\/us.vibram.com\/shop\/fivefingers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vibram Fivefingers Bikila<\/a>, the first model to be designed specifically for running.\u00a0 (The originals were designed for general barefooting and even boating.)\u00a0 The Bikila feature a little more cushioning shape, so they do depart ever-so-slightly from the barefoot ideals that made the original Fivefingers so popular.\u00a0 I&#8217;m working on Erin to try to get her to write a review for us.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So that&#8217;s my deal (yo).\u00a0 Lots of new, exciting things to try out.\u00a0 And you can expect to read about all of them in the coming weeks and months.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>First, thank you for all the congratulations and kind words about my 50-miler!\u00a0 I sincerely hope you all got the message that it&#8217;s something I really believe you could do, if that&#8217;s what you decided you wanted.
