guy or gal who shows up at the summer cookout with <em>good <\/em>veggie burgers.<\/p>\n<h2>Veggie Burgers That Aren&#8217;t Just Flavored Soy<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright burgers to review, I was overwhelmed by the number of choices.\u00a0 So many of them seemed so similar, and that&#8217;s because so many of them are based on soy.<\/p>\n<p>I think soy is fine to eat in moderation.\u00a0 But it doesn&#8217;t taste like much, so somehow it seems like cheating to add flavors to it to produce fake meat.\u00a0 Kind of gross, actually.<\/p>\n<p>So this taste test is a little different; it&#8217;s a taste taste for the non-soy-based burgers.\u00a0 These burgers are based on less-processed grains and vegetables, and as a result, they&#8217;re generally healthier than soy burgers, even if the protein numbers aren&#8217;t as quite as high.<\/p>\n<p>Simply for comparison, I included one classic soy burger, Boca, in the test.\u00a0 All the burgers were prepared in a skillet with only a light layer of oil except Morningstar and Dr. Praeger&#8217;s, whose directions called for grilling.<\/p>\n<p>And keep in mind: My nutrition grades are based on the needs of those training for marathons or other distance events.\u00a0 In other words, calories are a good thing (as long as they&#8217;re nutritious).<\/p>\n<p>Read on to find out how these six veggie burgers measured up in terms of taste and nutrition.<\/p>\n<h3>Gardenburger Portabella Veggie Burgers<\/h3>\n<p><strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-31693\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/gardenburger.jpg\" alt=\"Gardenburger Portabella Veggie Burgers\" width=\"226\" height=\"149\" \/>Vegan?<\/strong> No.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Soy-free?<\/strong> No.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Main ingredients:<\/strong> Brown rice and vegetables, including portabella mushrooms<\/p>\n<p><strong>Per patty:<\/strong> 100 calories, 2.5 g fat (1 g saturated), 17 g carbohydrates, 4 g protein, 490 mg sodium<\/p>\n<p>Gardenburger <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardenburger.com\/product.aspx?id=11750\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Portabella Veggie Burgers<\/a> were one of the most flavorful brands we tested.\u00a0 They had a smoky, almost-but-not-quite-too-salty tang to them, with lots of chunks of vegetables, making for an appealing texture.\u00a0 All this flavor comes at a cost, though, in the form of 20% of your daily recommended <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/sneaky-sodium\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sodium<\/a> intake and a list of ingredients longer than&#8212;well, you get the point.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nutrition: C<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Taste\/Texture: B<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>Sunshine Original Burgers<\/h3>\n<p><strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-31723\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/sunshine-burger-photo.jpg\" alt=\"Sunshine Original Burgers\" width=\"228\" height=\"171\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/sunshine-burger-photo.jpg 2048w, Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Soy-free?<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Main ingredients:<\/strong> Brown rice, sunflower seeds, carrots, herbs, sea salt (that&#8217;s <em>all <\/em>the ingredients)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Per patty:<\/strong> 190 calories, 13 g fat (1.5 g saturated), 14 g carbohydrate, 8 g protein, 320 mg sodium<\/p>\n<p>Sunshine Burgers were the nutritional powerhouse of the bunch.\u00a0 The only competitor not to violate Michael Pollan&#8217;s five-ingredient rule, Sunshine also packed in healthy fats and a relatively high amount of protein in addition to being gluten-free.\u00a0 Unfortunately, the flavor outlook wasn&#8217;t so sunny: Everyone who tried Sunshine mentioned that it tasted bready and dry, with a little too much sunflower seed flavor.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nutrition: A<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Taste\/Texture: C<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>Bahama Rice Burgers<\/h3>\n<p><strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-31677\" rice-based meat alternative, and beans<\/p>\n<p><strong>Per patty:<\/strong> 140 calories, 5 g fat (1 g saturated), 19 g carbohydrate, 4 g protein, 420 mg sodium<\/p>\n<p>Despite their name&#8217;s evoking images of a warm beach and a few bottles of Kalik,\u00a0 Bahama Rice Burgers didn&#8217;t fare so hot.\u00a0 We described them as &#8220;homemade-tasting, in a bad way,&#8221; &#8220;lentil-y,&#8221; and plain-old &#8220;not flavorful.&#8221;\u00a0 They are gluten-free, and the rice idea is kind of cute.\u00a0 It&#8217;s worth noting that Bahama Rice Burgers contain <em>salvia hispanica<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/tarahumara-pinole-chia-recipes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">chia<\/a> to you and me.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nutrition: B<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Taste\/Texture: D<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>Boca Vegan Meatless Burgers<\/h3>\n<p><strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-31679\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/boca-burger-photo.jpg\" alt=\"Boca Vegan Meatless Burgers\" width=\"225\" height=\"169\" Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Soy-free?<\/strong> No.<\/p>\n<p>Main ingredients: Water, soy protein concentrate, wheat gluten<\/p>\n<p>Per patty: 100 calories, 2.5 g fat (0 g saturated), 9 g carbohydrate, 13 g protein, 470 mg sodium<\/p>\n<p>As the only &#8220;soy burgers&#8221; in the taste test, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bocaburger.com\/products\/boca-burgers.aspx?productBox=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Boca Burgers<\/a> stood out with huge protein numbers.\u00a0 (Ok, huge to us.)\u00a0 Unfortunately, it comes mainly in the form of soy protein isolate, a highly-processed and difficult-to-digest form.\u00a0 The list of ingredients after that is surprisingly short.<\/p>\n<p>At first taste, I thought I had found a perfect substitute for a slightly-overdone burger; actual thought revealed that it was simply the familiar taste of charcoal.\u00a0 But if you&#8217;re craving a dry hamburger, Boca might be as close as you can get, short of slaughtering a cow.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nutrition: B-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Taste\/Texture: B<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>Morning Star Garden Veggie Patties<\/h3>\n<p><strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-31713\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/morningstar-burger-photo.jpg\" alt=\"Morning Star Garden Veggie Patties\" width=\"225\" height=\"169\" No.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Soy-free?<\/strong> No.<\/p>\n<p>Main ingredients: Mushrooms, water chestnuts, onions, more vegetables<\/p>\n<p>Per patty: 110 calories, 3.5 g fat (0.5 g saturated), 9 g carbohydrates, 10 g protein, 350 mg sodium<\/p>\n<p>Morningstar <a href=\"https:\/\/morningstarfarms.com\/product_detail.aspx?family=363&amp;id=323\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Garden Veggie Patties<\/a> hit a homerun with everyone who tasted them.\u00a0 We described them as &#8220;sausage-like&#8221; and &#8220;not just tolerable, but actually good.&#8221;\u00a0 A little bit of spice and just the right amount of char made Morningstar our favorite brand to taste.<\/p>\n<p>Nutritionally, they bombed.\u00a0 TVP, another highly processed form of soy, and a long list of ingredients with hard-to-pronounce words landed them near the bottom of the pile, in my eyes.\u00a0 Still, they taste good, and if you&#8217;re bringing a\u00a0 veggie burger to a barbecue, why not enjoy it?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nutrition: D<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Taste\/Texture: A+<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>Dr. Praeger&#8217;s California Veggie Burgers<\/h3>\n<p><strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-31684\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/dr-praeger-burger-photo.jpg\" alt=\"Dr. a facility that uses milk, eggs, and fish.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Soy-free?<\/strong> No, contains soybeans.<\/p>\n<p>Main ingredients: Lots of vegetables, with onions and string beans first<\/p>\n<p>Per patty: 110 calories, 4.5 g fat (0 g saturated), 13 g carbohydrate, 5 g protein, 250 mg sodium<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.drpraegers.com\/products\/products.aspx?SID=1&amp;Product_ID=127&amp;Category_ID=9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dr. Praeger&#8217;s<\/a> California Veggie Burgers were just what the doctor ordered&#8212;if that doctor had ordered a mouthful of succotash shaped like a patty.\u00a0 Actually, I was the only one who didn&#8217;t love them; Erin and Christine ranked them near the top of the list.\u00a0 They&#8217;re billed as the burger &#8220;where you recognize all the ingredients,&#8221; and that I did.\u00a0 Lots of vegetables and little else made it taste like&#8212;well, a vegetable patty.\u00a0 And that&#8217;s good, it just doesn&#8217;t taste like a burger.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, nowhere on the box does it say that Dr. Praeger&#8217;s burgers are vegan, yet no ingredients seem to make them non-vegan.\u00a0 Perhaps it&#8217;s that they&#8217;re processed in a facility that handles milk and fish?\u00a0 Worth looking into if your diet is very strict.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nutrition: A-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> Taste: B<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So, no clear winner swept both the Nutrition and Taste categories.\u00a0 Perhaps such a combination can only be found my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/cookout-veggie-burgers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">making them yourself<\/a>.\u00a0
