{"id":9396,"date":"2010-05-26T07:19:59","date_gmt":"2010-05-26T11:19:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/?p=9396"},"modified":"2020-04-13T15:17:25","modified_gmt":"2020-04-13T19:17:25","slug":"50-mile-training-lesson","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/50-mile-training-lesson\/","title":{"rendered":"Lessons Learned from Training to Run 50 Miles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Think of somewhere that takes you an hour to get to by car.\u00a0 For me, that&#8217;s about 50 miles, and it&#8217;s too far to drive to get dinner or to commute to work.<\/p>\n<p>But ten days from now, I&#8217;m going to run that far.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-31619\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/chalkboard-photo.jpg\" alt=\"Chalkboard with words &quot;Set Goals&quot;\" width=\"296\" height=\"232\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/chalkboard-photo.jpg 1050w, https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/chalkboard-photo-300x235.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/chalkboard-photo-768x602.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/chalkboard-photo-1024x803.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 296px) 100vw, 296px\" \/>I&#8217;m past the phase of waking up in the middle of the night thinking, &#8220;What did I do?&#8221; in regards to signing up for something so outlandish.<\/p>\n<p>Now it kind of feels like a big, nasty dentist appointment that you know you have to go to but you try not to think about.<\/p>\n<p>You know you&#8217;ll get through it.\u00a0 You know that when you&#8217;re done, you&#8217;ll feel a huge sense of relief.\u00a0 But you also know it&#8217;s really going to hurt, and you just have to deal with that.<\/p>\n<p>I count the period since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/boston-marathon-qualifying\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">qualifying for Boston<\/a> as my training for a 50-miler.\u00a0 That&#8217;s when I set the goal, and the ultras I&#8217;ve done in the meantime have just been part of the process.\u00a0 And I can tell you, without a doubt, that I&#8217;m a much different runner than I was before.<\/p>\n<p>So here are a few of the lessons I&#8217;ve learned during this training for a new, previously unthinkable distance.\u00a0 Most apply to running; perhaps a few apply to life if you make a stretch.\u00a0 But that&#8217;s not the point, so don&#8217;t go crazy with that.<\/p>\n<h3>You can run a lot farther if you slow down.<\/h3>\n<p>Obvious, right?\u00a0 I don&#8217;t think so.<\/p>\n<p>You say you can&#8217;t run farther than a marathon, or maybe a half.\u00a0 But it&#8217;s very likely you ran that race as fast as you were able to run it.<\/p>\n<p>What if you slowed down?\u00a0 You&#8217;d run farther.<\/p>\n<p>What if you slowed down a lot?\u00a0 (And even <em>walked<\/em> sometimes?)\u00a0 You&#8217;d run much farther.\u00a0 It&#8217;d be scary, because you&#8217;ve never done it.\u00a0 But once you had, it wouldn&#8217;t be scary anymore.\u00a0 And you could run farther still.<\/p>\n<h3>Comfort is everything.\u00a0 So be comfortable.<\/h3>\n<p>Unless you&#8217;re trying to win the race, running 30 or more miles isn&#8217;t really about how well you can run 30 or more miles.\u00a0 It&#8217;s about staying comfortable while you run that circus distance.\u00a0 The more miserable the experience, the less likely you are to come back the next week and do it again.<\/p>\n<p>So:<\/p>\n<p>Wear shorts that don&#8217;t chafe you.\u00a0 Get a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/nathan-hydration-vest-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">hydration vest<\/a> or some other way to carry stuff that you like.\u00a0 Use blister powder and wear good socks.\u00a0 Try <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/cep-compression-socks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">compression socks<\/a>. Apply Vaseline or other lubricant liberally and bring some for the road, just in case.\u00a0 Run slowly enough, especially on hills, that you&#8217;re not breathing hard or raising your heart rate too much.\u00a0 Find (or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/thrive-sports-drink\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">make<\/a>) a sports drink you really like.\u00a0 Figure out what <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/post-workout-recovery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">food your stomach can handle<\/a> and what it can&#8217;t.\u00a0 Pee when you have to pee.\u00a0 Bring toilet paper.<\/p>\n<h3>Trail running is more fun than road running.<\/h3>\n<p>It just is.\u00a0 And running long on trails doesn&#8217;t hurt my feet or joints the way running, say, a 20-miler on the roads does.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the ultras you&#8217;ll find are trail races, so learning <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/trail-running-for-beginners\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">how to run trails<\/a> always seemed like an annoyance I had to put up with in order to become an ultrarunner.\u00a0 Now it&#8217;s the best thing I&#8217;ve ever done (except get married).<\/p>\n<h3>It&#8217;s a mind game.<\/h3>\n<p>I&#8217;ve gotten lots of advice from friends, and none of it is about running.\u00a0 Running a few miles, five or six minutes slower than you&#8217;re capable of, is the easy part.\u00a0 It&#8217;s about getting your head in the right place so you can run 50 (or 100) of them.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/news.runtowin.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Blaine<\/a> told me how awful miles 30-40 will be, but that it will get better after that.\u00a0 My friend Shawn told me that it&#8217;s about getting your legs to be your mind&#8217;s bitch.\u00a0 My friend Dave told me that going out too fast and hitting a wall early in a 50-miler feels roughly 100 times worse than it does in a marathon.<\/p>\n<p>A lot of this is scary, but I&#8217;m glad I learned it from them first.\u00a0 Respect the distance.<\/p>\n<h3>I will finish.<\/h3>\n<p>I can say this now because I&#8217;ve been tested.\u00a0 The two 50K&#8217;s I did, especially <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/first-ultramarathon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the first<\/a>, taught me that I will keep running even when it hurts and I hate it and I never, ever want to run again.<\/p>\n<p>No marathon ever tested me like that, even the Boston qualifier.\u00a0 Ultras brought a new level of suck, and I learned that I will keep going even when it is terrible.<\/p>\n<p>50K isn&#8217;t 50 miles.\u00a0 But if someone held a gun to your head and made you run, you could run a lot farther than you think (though that would be a rather weird thing for a gunman to demand).\u00a0 So if you make quitting seem like getting shot in the head, you&#8217;ll keep going.\u00a0 If it comes to that, I think I will.<\/p>\n<p>Unless I get hurt.\u00a0 Then I&#8217;ll stop.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Think of somewhere that takes you an hour to get to by car.\u00a0 For me, that&#8217;s about 50 miles, and it&#8217;s too far to drive to get dinner or to commute to work.
