Miles I Once Called Impossible&#8212;It&#039;s Gotta Be the Socks!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There&#8217;s a trail in my town that I love.\u00a0 It&#8217;s called the Ma and Pa trail, short for Maryland and Pennsylvania, I think.\u00a0 It&#8217;s partially paved, partially gravel, and it goes through the woods with some winding bridges.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-31573\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/cep-sleeve-photo.jpg\" alt=\"Image of leg wearing black compression sock and running sneaker\" width=\"282\" sizes=\"(max-width: 282px) 100vw, 282px\" \/>And it&#8217;s really hilly.<\/p>\n<p>This is great, except there&#8217;s one problem.\u00a0 It&#8217;s so hilly that I&#8217;ve never been able to do long runs on it.\u00a0 I attempted a 16- and 18-miler on it a few years ago, and since then I&#8217;ve told a lot of people that my body just can&#8217;t handle that distance on this trail.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday, though, I broke through that barrier.\u00a0 In my first &#8220;official&#8221;\u00a0 training run for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/north-face-50-mile-recap\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">North Face Endurance Challenge 50-miler<\/a> in eight weeks, I ran 21 miles on the Ma and Pa.<\/p>\n<h3>What made the difference?<\/h3>\n<p>Mostly, the fact that I&#8217;m in the best shape of my life.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve run two ultras this year, haven&#8217;t been injured in over a year, and my diet is cleaner than it has ever been.<\/p>\n<p>But partially, I think it was the socks.<\/p>\n<h3>CEP Compression Socks<\/h3>\n<p>Compression socks (for use <em>while <\/em>running, not just after) first appeared on my radar when I saw Blaine Moore of <a href=\"https:\/\/news.runtowin.com\/2009\/05\/12\/cox-sports-marathon-2009.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Run to Win<\/a> wearing them in a race.\u00a0 And then I started seeing them at lots of races.<\/p>\n<p>They look kind of ridiculous, so I doubt people are wearing them as a fashion statement.\u00a0 Could they really make that big a difference to your running?<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-31572\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/cep-compression-socks-photo.png\" alt=\"3 compression socks: pink, white and black\" width=\"257\" height=\"257\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/cep-compression-socks-photo.png 300w, https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/cep-compression-socks-photo-150x150.png 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 257px) 100vw, 257px\" \/>I was so excited when CEP Sportswear offered to send me a pair of their compression socks and compression sleeves to review.\u00a0 (The sleeves are for your legs, not your arms as I first thought.)\u00a0 CEP&#8217;s socks offer graduated compression, and they&#8217;re sized based on shoe size <em>and <\/em>calf size.\u00a0 And get this: According to CEP, there&#8217;s a published medical study showing that runners in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/recommended-products\/\">CEP compression socks<\/a> experienced <strong>5% better performance, which equates to 10-12 minutes in a marathon!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Let me tell you, I am really impressed at how well these work.\u00a0 Even as I&#8217;ve become a stronger runner, runs of 18 miles or more always end with my feet and legs hurting and feeling really heavy.\u00a0 Running in compression socks, I don&#8217;t get any of that!<\/p>\n<p>Sure, I still get tired by the end.\u00a0 But there&#8217;s not that discomfort, and I think that&#8217;s so important.\u00a0 Even if you can run through the pain, I really believe that so much of running long is about eliminating stressors to your mind and body.\u00a0 And pain is a major one.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-31573\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/cep-sleeve-photo.jpg\" alt=\"Image of leg wearing black compression sock and white sneaker\" width=\"320\" height=\"426\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/cep-sleeve-photo.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/cep-sleeve-photo-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/cep-sleeve-photo-768x1024.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Of the socks and sleeves, I prefer the sleeves.\u00a0 They don&#8217;t have a &#8220;foot&#8221; to them, so you can wear whatever sock you want.\u00a0 And if you need to change shoes and socks, like I&#8217;m sure I will after I run through a few streams during my 50-miler, you can do so without taking the sleeve off.\u00a0 (If the foot part of the sock provides any additional benefit, I didn&#8217;t notice it.)<\/p>\n<h3>Can they really make you run faster?<\/h3>\n<p>Without a lot of testing on my own, that&#8217;s hard to say.\u00a0 But based on how I feel running in them, it would be strange to think that wouldn&#8217;t translate into better performance on race day.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m almost certain that I&#8217;ll wear these during part or all of my 50-miler.\u00a0 Whether they make me run faster or not, they&#8217;ll make me more comfortable.\u00a0 And if I&#8217;m going to spend a Sunday running that freaking far, then I&#8217;ll take whatever comfort I can get.\u00a0 And I&#8217;d <em>highly<\/em> recommend them to anyone else who experiences foot or leg discomfort as the miles add up.<\/p>\n<p>CEP offers sizes=\"(max-width: 307px) 100vw, 307px\" \/>I figured I&#8217;d also mention another pair of socks I just got: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.injinji.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Injinji toe socks<\/a>!\u00a0 I paid my own hard-earned money for these, mainly so that I could wear them with my Vibram FiveFingers, to avoid the nasty blisters on my instep that the VFF&#8217;s give me.\u00a0 But I&#8217;ve also heard that they&#8217;re great for avoiding blisters in regular shoes, since by separating your toes from one another, they prevent the skin from rubbing.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, I&#8217;ve worn them twice.\u00a0 They worked out great on the track in the VFF&#8217;s, and on the trail in my trail shoes.\u00a0 Maybe one day I&#8217;ll pair them with the
