{"id":5408,"date":"2009-09-28T13:12:03","date_gmt":"2009-09-28T17:12:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/?p=5408"},"modified":"2020-02-27T16:44:41","modified_gmt":"2020-02-27T21:44:41","slug":"caffeine-running","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/caffeine-running\/","title":{"rendered":"Experimenting with Performance-Enhancing Drugs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In every way but one, my 10-mile run at Boston-qualifying pace yesterday was the same as so many others I&#8217;ve done.\u00a0 The lone difference &#8212; I was on the juice.<\/p>\n<p>The juice, in this case, was <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yerba_mat%C3%A9\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">yerba mate<\/a>, a South American plant whose leaves are used to make an herbal tea with caffeine content similar to that of coffee.\u00a0 Yerba mate is purported to provide a gentler stimulation than coffee, with less stress on the adrenal glands and none of the jitteriness, anxiety, or sleeplessness that people get from coffee.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-31095 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/yerba-mate-photo.jpg\" alt=\"Yerba Mate tea sachet\" width=\"1536\" height=\"2048\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/yerba-mate-photo.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/yerba-mate-photo-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/yerba-mate-photo-768x1024.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1536px) 100vw, 1536px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To me, it seems like caffeine is caffeine, but also to me, it seems like cats and dogs should be able to mate and produce dog-cats.\u00a0 So that doesn&#8217;t mean much.\u00a0 And since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/brendan-brazier-interview\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brendan Brazier<\/a>, Mr. Anti-Stimulation himself, recommends yerba mate for a little extra boost on race day and during the occasional workout, I figured I owed it to myself to at least test it out.<\/p>\n<p>Much as I enjoy a nice caffeine jolt when I&#8217;m reading or doing math, I&#8217;ve never been one to drink it before workouts.\u00a0 The two just don&#8217;t seem to mix for me.\u00a0 I think the reason is that when I drink caffeine, my mind races and a lot of good, creative, conscious thought starts flowing.\u00a0 But on a two-hour run, that&#8217;s the last thing I want.\u00a0 I do my best to zone out on these runs; I worry that I could literally think myself into becoming a crazy person if I didn&#8217;t.\u00a0 Two hours without zoning out and I think I would tie some sort of thought-knot in my head that only tightens as I try to undo it.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, my long run day each week has always been a guaranteed no-coffee day, which I kind of like because it prevents my body from doing whatever it does when one develops a caffeine addiction.<\/p>\n<p>The only other time I &#8220;juiced&#8221; was when I tried some caffeine pills that I got at the expo on before the Disney Marathon in January. The upshot of this brilliant strategy was a cold sweat before the race even started and my learning <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/first-marathon\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">rule #4<\/a>: Don&#8217;t try out new goodies on race day.<\/p>\n<p>So I tried yerba mate for the first time on my run yesterday, rather than risk any marathon-morning surprises.\u00a0 The result: a gentler buzz than coffee without any unpleasant after effects.\u00a0 Great!<\/p>\n<p>Oh yeah, and a weird sweat during Mile 1 on a sixty-degree day.\u00a0 And a higher-than-normal heart rate.\u00a0 Not great.<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s more (or less),I didn&#8217;t notice any appreciable energy gains.\u00a0 Maybe a little bit of an adrenaline rush at first, but it didn&#8217;t seem to last.\u00a0 My worry about trying something like this before a race is that I&#8217;d get a rush at the beginning and a crash later on, during the part where I&#8217;m already wondering why I keep coming back for more of this misery.<\/p>\n<p>So I&#8217;m thinking I&#8217;ll skip the pre-race yerba mate syringe in the buttock.\u00a0 Maybe I&#8217;ll bring along a gel with caffeine as a last resort in case it appears my Boston dreams are vanishing in a sea of bonk.\u00a0 These little suckers only have 20 mg of caffeine each though, about a fifth the amount in a cup of coffee.<\/p>\n<p>One last thing: do I really want to rely on a drug (it is that, don&#8217;t forget) to achieve this goal I&#8217;ve worked my ass off to get?\u00a0 Or do I want to do it on my own, without any help from the big C?\u00a0 I don&#8217;t really know the answer to this.\u00a0 So many people will have caffeine before their race anyway, not to improve their performance, but as part of their morning routine.\u00a0 Then again, I&#8217;m not competing against them; I&#8217;m competing against me.<\/p>\n<p>STOP!
