{"id":5281,"date":"2009-09-21T11:46:37","date_gmt":"2009-09-21T15:46:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/?p=5281"},"modified":"2020-02-27T16:44:21","modified_gmt":"2020-02-27T21:44:21","slug":"am-i-a-runner","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/am-i-a-runner\/","title":{"rendered":"I Am Not (Really) a Runner"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Well, it&#8217;s taper time.\u00a0 Only 13 days left until my marathon.\u00a0 I took it easy this weekend with a fast six-mile run on the trail near my house.\u00a0 There are still a few decent workouts scheduled for the remainder of my training, including a 10-miler at qualifying pace, but nothing even close to what I&#8217;ve been doing recently.<\/p>\n<p>Runners will tell you that they hate taper time.\u00a0 They can&#8217;t stand being inactive for two weeks.\u00a0 It makes them antsy.\u00a0 By the time marathon day rolls around, they&#8217;ve driven themselves (and sometimes their family members) crazy.<\/p>\n<p>For me, it&#8217;s like Christmas.\u00a0 Two-to-three-hour blocks of time become mine again, sleepless nights before long runs cease.\u00a0 Aches and pains, blisters, and chafing all get a chance to heal.\u00a0 When I know that I&#8217;m doing all I can to prepare for my marathon by <em>not <\/em>training, I couldn&#8217;t be happier.<\/p>\n<p>This is just one reason why I contend that I am not a runner.<\/p>\n<p>Sure, by any literal definition, I am one.\u00a0 In two weeks I&#8217;ll have run my sixth marathon, and just maybe I&#8217;ll have qualified for Boston.\u00a0 But when I line up at the start amongst all the real runners, I&#8217;m going to feel like an imposter, just like every other time.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t love running like they do.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t do it to unwind, to have some time to myself, or because of some mysterious runner&#8217;s high they tell me exists.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t have many runner friends.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t spend much time shopping for running shoes, craving new running gadgets, or reading running books.\u00a0 If I don&#8217;t have a race scheduled, I can&#8217;t get myself out the door to run.\u00a0 And, as I said in my very early post <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/how-to-not-hate-running\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">How to Not Hate Running<\/a>, I just don&#8217;t like it all that much!<\/p>\n<p>I run for two reasons.\u00a0 I run to stay in shape, and I run because there is something in me that gets a major rush from training to do things I think I can&#8217;t do.\u00a0 For me, that part of it is extremely rewarding, and that&#8217;s where my passion comes from.\u00a0 After Boston, whenever it happens, there will be something else.\u00a0 Maybe a 50-miler, maybe a triathlon, something.\u00a0 It will surely involve running, but it won&#8217;t be about running.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chasingthekenyans.com\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lindsay<\/a> is a runner.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/sherunsbrooklyn.wordpress.com\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mel<\/a> is a runner.\u00a0 I am not (really) a runner.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Well, it&#8217;s taper time.\u00a0 Only 13 days left until my marathon.\u00a0 I took it easy this weekend with a fast six-mile run on the trail near my house.\u00a0 There are still a few decent workouts scheduled for the remainder of my training, including a 10-miler at qualifying pace, but nothing even close to what I&#8217;ve [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":7,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"wprm-recipe-roundup-name":"","wprm-recipe-roundup-description":"","_genesis_hide_title":false,"_genesis_hide_breadcrumbs":false,"_genesis_hide_singular_image":false,"_genesis_hide_footer_widgets":false,"_genesis_custom_body_class":"","_genesis_custom_post_class":"","_genesis_layout":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[75],"tags":[],"class_list":{"0":"post-5281","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","6":"category-fitness","7":"entry"},"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.1.1 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>Can you call yourself a runner?<\/title>\n<meta name=\"description\" content=\"I don&#039;t spend much time shopping for running shoes, craving new running gadgets, or reading running books.
