Or any nutrient, for that matter. I just eat a variety of whole foods, and I get what I need to feel great and support my training. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>And whey and soy protein powder, by the way, aren&#8217;t whole foods.\u00a0 They&#8217;re isolates.\u00a0 The other nutrients have been removed to boost the protein concentration.\u00a0 They&#8217;re highly processed, acid-forming foods.\u00a0 (Ever wonder how they got to be pure white?)\u00a0 I stopped eating them a few months ago.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-32471 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Hemp-Protein.jpg\" alt=\"Nutiva Organic Hemp Protein Powder\" width=\"578\" height=\"578\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Hemp-Protein.jpg 578w, https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Hemp-Protein-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Hemp-Protein-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Hemp-Protein-500x500.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 578px) 100vw, 578px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Enter hemp protein.\u00a0 Raw, vegan, minimally processed.\u00a0 Made by simply milling whole hemp seeds.\u00a0 And it&#8217;s green, because it still contains that wonderful alkaline-forming chlorophyll.<\/p>\n<p>Warning!\u00a0 If you&#8217;re one of those I-need-30-grams-of-protein-every-morning-in-my-smoothie types, then hemp protein isn&#8217;t for you.\u00a0 Go back to the snow-white stuff.\u00a0 Most hemp protein contains less than 15 grams of protein per serving.\u00a0 Again, because it&#8217;s not an isolate!\u00a0 In addition to the protein, there&#8217;s still a good amount of healthy carbohydrate and fat in it.\u00a0 But that&#8217;s just the point.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a whole food, so you&#8217;re getting the fiber, omega-3&#8217;s and other goodies in their natural state, not as additives.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livingharvest.com\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Living Harvest<\/a>, the same people who make <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/living-harvest-tempt\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tempt<\/a> non-dairy products, sent me some coupons to try their hemp protein powders.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve been using hemp products for a few months now, since reading <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/thrive-diet\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Thrive<\/em><\/a>, so I was really excited to try some of their stuff.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-31066\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/hemp-protein-green-photo.jpg\" alt=\"Oen canister view of Organic Hemp Protein Powder\" width=\"232\" height=\"309\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/hemp-protein-green-photo.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/hemp-protein-green-photo-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/hemp-protein-green-photo-768x1024.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 232px) 100vw, 232px\" \/>I tried three products:\u00a0 unflavored organic hemp protein, vanilla spice flavor hemp protein, and hemp oil.\u00a0 I tested all of these products out in my morning smoothies, putting the unflavored hemp protein in my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/thrive-diet\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">mango jalapeno smoothie<\/a> and the vanilla-spice in my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/thrive-smoothie-recipes\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">blueberry rooibos smoothie<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0 And I put the hemp oil in both smoothies, in place of my normal Udo&#8217;s oil blend.<\/p>\n<p>And wouldn&#8217;t you know it, both protein powders were delicious.\u00a0 Or, at least, they didn&#8217;t mess up the smoothies, because I could hardly taste them.\u00a0 And isn&#8217;t that the idea?\u00a0 The vanilla-spice flavor did come through a little bit in the blueberry smoothie, but it was a good, natural flavor.\u00a0 (It&#8217;s made from organic spices and vanilla bean.)<\/p>\n<p>The hemp oil did impart a little bit of a taste to the smoothies, but I got used to it almost immediately.\u00a0 It&#8217;s just like with flaxseed oil or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.florahealth.com\/us\/products\/udos-choice-oil-blend-369\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Udo&#8217;s blend<\/a>; it&#8217;s a little weird at first but very easy to adjust to.\u00a0 And the health benefits of these oils make adding them to your smoothies a no-brainer.\u00a0 (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/brendan-brazier-interview\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brendan Brazier<\/a> chooses hemp oil over the other types of oil.\u00a0 If it&#8217;s good enough for B-squared, it&#8217;s good enough for me.)<\/p>\n<p>I will say this: on both protein canisters, it says &#8220;mix with your favorite non-dairy beverage to make a delicious smoothie.&#8221;\u00a0 I tried this with both kinds, and they were most definitely <em>not<\/em> delicious.\u00a0 They tasted very green and weird.\u00a0 In fact, I couldn&#8217;t finish either one of them.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll think I&#8217;ll stick to my other smoothies.<\/p>\n<p>The one drawback of hemp protein, at least from the perspective of a full-time grad student, is the cost.\u00a0 The price is just over a dollar per serving.\u00a0 If you want bang for your protein buck, it&#8217;s not the way to go.\u00a0 But when you look at it in terms of total nutrition and get away from that protein fetish (come on, admit it, you know you still have one), it starts to seem a little more reasonable.\u00a0 Plus, Erin and I have been using only about half a serving in our smoothies, since that&#8217;s what&#8217;s called for in the <em>Thrive<\/em> recipes.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, great products and I highly recommend them.\u00a0 Just not mixed with non-dairy beverage and nothing else. \ud83d\ude42\u00a0 Thanks Living Harvest!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Protein.\u00a0 Tell someone you&#8217;re vegetarian, and they&#8217;ll ask how you get protein.
