{"id":4154,"date":"2009-08-10T10:55:14","date_gmt":"2009-08-10T14:55:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/?p=4154"},"modified":"2021-02-12T14:15:44","modified_gmt":"2021-02-12T19:15:44","slug":"thrive-energy-gel-recipe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/thrive-energy-gel-recipe\/","title":{"rendered":"Thrive Raw Energy Gel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On my run today, I went <em>au naturale<\/em>, getting all my nutrition from raw, real ingredients.&nbsp;&nbsp; I made two things from <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/gear\/#books\">Thrive<\/a> <\/em>last night to bring along today&#8212;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/thrive-sports-drink\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lemon-Lime Sports Drink<\/a> and this Lemon-Lime Gel.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-30921 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/thrive-ingredients-photo.jpg\" alt=\"Thrive Raw Energy Gel Ingredients\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1536\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/thrive-ingredients-photo.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/thrive-ingredients-photo-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/thrive-ingredients-photo-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/thrive-ingredients-photo-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/thrive-ingredients-photo-500x375.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2048px) 100vw, 2048px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Interestingly, both of these were made from similar ingredients, just in different proportions.&nbsp; I know they don&#8217;t look too terribly exciting (the lighting in my kitchen does them no favors either), but both of these were really tasty.&nbsp; I like the drink as much as any commercial sports drink, though next time I&#8217;ll strain out the date pulp and whatever coconut oil doesn&#8217;t emulsify.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">But the gel was the real surprise.&nbsp; I absolutely HATE normal gels, gu&#8217;s, or whatever you want to call them&#8212;I&#8217;ve stopped even trying to eat them during runs.&nbsp; But this one tasted so much better.&nbsp; I can&#8217;t be giving <em>all<\/em> of Brendan&#8217;s recipes away, so I&#8217;ll just do the gel recipe, since that&#8217;s the one I&#8217;m most excited about.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Also, exciting news in NMA land&#8212;my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/brendan-brazier-interview\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">interview<\/a> with <em>Thrive<\/em> author Brendan Brazier is tomorrow morning!<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">Raw Lemon-Lime Sport Gel Recipe (from Thrive)<\/h3>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>Ingredients (for 3\/4 cup, twice as much as pictured)<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>4 dates (I used dried dates, soaked for a few hours)<\/li>\n<li>1\/2 cup raw agave nectar<\/li>\n<li>1 Tbsp lime zest<\/li>\n<li>2 tsp lemon zest<\/li>\n<li>1\/2 tsp dulse (I skipped this, since I didn&#8217;t have it)<\/li>\n<li>Sea salt to taste<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Combine all the ingredients in a blender or small food processor until desired consistency is reached.&nbsp; Put into plastic zip-lock bag or gel flask.&nbsp; (You can see that in my sublime hatred of carrying heavy or bulky things with me on runs, I chose the former.&nbsp; Just bite off a corner when you&#8217;re ready to eat it.)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So easy, and so much better than what you can buy.&nbsp; I wasn&#8217;t able to get the citrus zest and date pulp completely incorporated into the gel; it wasn&#8217;t an issue when I was running, but if this weirds you out, then you could just be careful and pour the gel off of the solid bits.<\/p>\n<p>For more posts and recipes on natural sports nutrition, check out the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/post-workout-recovery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Running Fuel<\/a> page.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On my run today, I went au naturale, getting all my nutrition from raw, real ingredients.&nbsp;&nbsp; I made two things from Thrive last night to bring along today&#8212;Lemon-Lime Sports Drink and this Lemon-Lime Gel.
