{"id":3929,"date":"2009-07-30T07:25:53","date_gmt":"2009-07-30T11:25:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/?p=3929"},"modified":"2020-04-09T14:15:20","modified_gmt":"2020-04-09T18:15:20","slug":"marathon-prediction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/marathon-prediction\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Predict Your Marathon Time"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Let&#8217;s say you&#8217;re cruising through your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/marathon-roadmap\" data-wplink-edit=\"true\">first marathon<\/a>.\u00a0 You&#8217;re running a little faster than you&#8217;ve trained, but hey, it&#8217;s race day, and you&#8217;re charged with adrenaline.<\/p>\n<p>You cross the halfway point five minutes faster than you had planned based on your training pace.\u00a0 You&#8217;re rocking your first race, and everything is great.\u00a0 And then disaster strikes.<\/p>\n<p>At Mile 15, it hits you.\u00a0 For the first time, you notice your legs feel heavy.\u00a0 By Mile 16, the idea of a quick walk break sounds great.\u00a0 By 17, you&#8217;re not sure you can even finish the race.<\/p>\n<p>What happened?\u00a0 You were so disciplined in your training, and you tried to listen to your body on race day.\u00a0 The problem is that you didn&#8217;t know what you were capable of and had no idea how fast to run.\u00a0 And a good rule of thumb is that for every minute too fast that you run the first half of a marathon, you&#8217;ll lose two minutes in the second half.<\/p>\n<p>You need a better idea of how fast you can reasonably expect to run.\u00a0 These three marathon prediction methods well help you do that, and avoid the race-day disaster that so many runners experience.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Yasso 800&#8217;s <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the idea.\u00a0 Pick a marathon time you&#8217;d like to run.\u00a0 Replace hours by minutes and minutes by seconds to get your 800 meter pace.<\/p>\n<p>Sounds complicated, but it&#8217;s not!\u00a0 Since I need to run the marathon in 3 hours, 10 minutes to qualify for Boston, my 800 pace becomes 3 minutes, 10 seconds.\u00a0 If you can do 10 of these 800&#8217;s, slowly jogging for that same amount of time between each (3:10 for me), then this method predicts you can run your marathon at the corresponding hours-and-minutes time!\u00a0 A lot of people say that Yasso 800&#8217;s are too optimistic a prediction time, so adding five minutes to the time you predict is probably a good idea.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a link to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/article\/0,7120,s6-238-244-255-624-0,00.html\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Runner&#8217;s World&#8217;s take on Yasso&#8217;s<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Galloway&#8217;s Magic Mile<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Former Olympian and current coach Jeff Galloway (the walk-run guy) has his own method for predicting race times, and not just marathons.\u00a0 And the great thing about his method is that it&#8217;s simple, albeit painful.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s how it works.\u00a0 Run <em>one mile<\/em> as fast as you can, middle-school style (don&#8217;t barf or die, though).\u00a0 Then to predict your marathon time, take your mile time (in seconds) and multiply by 1.3.\u00a0 The result is your marathon pace per mile, in seconds.<\/p>\n<p>I haven&#8217;t done this one yet, but just to give an example:\u00a0 In my last 5K, I ran the first mile in 5:53.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s say that if I were going all-out, I could have run a single mile in 5:40 (you&#8217;re supposed to actually do it, of course, not guess).\u00a0 That&#8217;s 340 seconds, and 340 x 1.3 = 442 seconds, or 7:22 marathon pace, for a 3:13 marathon.<\/p>\n<p>Galloway actually gives you a break; he says to run four one-mile time trials, drop your lowest, and average the remaining three to get your mile time.\u00a0 He also gives different adjustment factors to predict 5K, 10K, and half marathon times at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jeffgalloway.com\/resources\/gallracepredict.html\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">his website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Jack Daniels&#8217; Tables<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-30816\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/3538-1.jpg\" alt=\"Daniel's Running Formula by Jack Daniels, PHD, book cover\" width=\"175\" height=\"252\" \/>Jack Daniels is a well-known running coach and author of a book I really like, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B002BLZ6HI?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=nomeaath-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B002BLZ6HI\">Daniels&#8217; Running Formula<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=nomeaath-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=B002BLZ6HI\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/> (Amazon affiliate link).\u00a0 In the book, he gives a table for predicting any common race time, given any other common race time, based on what seems like a lot of research and statistics.\u00a0 You can find such a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coacheseducation.com\/endur\/jack-daniels-nov-00.htm\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pace table<\/a> here (Table 1).<\/p>\n<p>Basically, you look up a recent race time, and from that you look to the left or right to find your projected time for another distance.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t worry about the &#8220;VDOT&#8221; column, it&#8217;s something from the book.\u00a0 Ideally, you want the race distances to be similar (i.e. use a half marathon time to predict a marathon time, if you have a recent one).\u00a0 You also want things like the terrain and conditions to be similar.<\/p>\n<p>Example:\u00a0 My half marathon a few months ago was extremely hilly, so I can&#8217;t really compare that one.\u00a0 But if I look up my recent 5K time of 19:15 on a very flat course, the equivalent marathon time is about 3:04.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re not into tables, running coach Greg McMillan has a similar tool here, called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.calculators.org\/health\/mcmillan-running.php\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">McMillan&#8217;s Running Calculator<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>This post is part of a series of posts designed to teach you <a href=\"..\/how-to-run-long\/\">how to run long<\/a> and strong.\u00a0 Go check out the rest!<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Let&#8217;s say you&#8217;re cruising through your first marathon.\u00a0 You&#8217;re running a little faster than you&#8217;ve trained, but hey, it&#8217;s race day, and you&#8217;re charged with adrenaline.
