{"id":30247,"date":"2009-04-12T18:33:46","date_gmt":"2009-04-12T22:33:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/?p=700"},"modified":"2020-02-26T15:35:15","modified_gmt":"2020-02-26T20:35:15","slug":"product-reviews-la-brea-bread-and-gimme-lean-ground-beef-style","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/product-reviews-la-brea-bread-and-gimme-lean-ground-beef-style\/","title":{"rendered":"Product Reviews: La Brea Bread and Gimme Lean Ground Beef Style"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A little change of pace for this Sunday afternoon, and something that I hope to do more of since we&#8217;re trying so many\u00a0different products as part of this new lifestyle.\u00a0\u00a0One is good, the other not so good (notice I\u00a0didn&#8217;t say &#8220;not so much,&#8221; because people need to stop saying that).\u00a0\u00a0I&#8217;ll start with the good.<\/p>\n<h3>La Brea Whole Grain Bread<\/h3>\n<p>Ever since\u00a0I read<em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Defense-Food-Eaters-Manifesto\/dp\/0143114964\/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1239577631&amp;sr=8-1\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">In Defense of\u00a0Food<\/a><\/em>, I&#8217;ve been very conscious about the number of ingredients in everyday\u00a0foods which I\u00a0took for granted\u00a0to be\u00a0natural and healthy.\u00a0 In his book,\u00a0Michael\u00a0Pollan recommends avoiding foods with more than five ingredients (the book, by the way, has all kinds of\u00a0simple, memorable\u00a0rules like this).\u00a0 Certainly this rule doesn&#8217;t apply to\u00a0food you make\u00a0at home, since you know\u00a0exactly what&#8217;s going into it, but it&#8217;s\u00a0a very quick way of determining what\u00a0food\u00a0at the grocery store is &#8220;real.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Following the five-ingredient rule\u00a0isn&#8217;t too difficult when you&#8217;re conscious of it, but one food which astounded\u00a0me with the length of its ingredient list is bread.\u00a0\u00a0Even the\u00a0whole-grain, whole-wheat breads\u00a0are generally loaded with preservatives and lots of other ingredients\u00a0that are hard to pronounce (another\u00a0dead giveaway\u00a0for\u00a0fake foods).\u00a0 The best solution is\u00a0probably to get your bread fresh from a baker, but the bakery near me doesn&#8217;t even make whole-wheat bread, so that&#8217;s not an option.\u00a0 But today I found La Brea Whole Grain bread in the supermarket.\u00a0 It&#8217;s sold near the fresh-baked bread, not the packaged loaves, so that&#8217;s the first\u00a0sign that it&#8217;s decent.\u00a0 The list of ingredients is much longer than five, but almost\u00a0all of it is whole or cracked\u00a0grains and seeds, with just a few of the hard-to-pronounce things at the end.\u00a0\u00a0Just some of the grains, seeds, and other good stuff: Cracked wheat, dark rye,\u00a0millet, flaxseeds, sunflower seeds, barley, oats, corn, soybeans, and brown rice.\u00a0 And it tastes\u00a0as good as any other whole-grain loaf I&#8217;ve found.\u00a0\u00a0It&#8217;s definitely not a perfect solution to my bread-hunting woes since the first ingredient is unbleached flour rather than 100% whole -wheat flour, but it&#8217;s the best I&#8217;ve yet found.\u00a0 I haven&#8217;t looked too hard in the natural foods store yet, because I am not overly excited about spending five dollars for a loaf of bread.\u00a0 But I&#8217;m interested in learning\u00a0more about the &#8220;sprouted&#8221; wheat bread that they sell there.\u00a0 Anyone know about this?<\/p>\n<h3>Gimme Lean Ground Beef Style<\/h3>\n<p><em><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-30626 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/04\/gimmeleanbeef1.jpg\" alt=\"Gimme Lean Ground Beef Style\" width=\"300\" height=\"182\" \/>\u00a0<\/em>To sum\u00a0this one\u00a0up in the immortal words of <em>American Idol&#8217;s<\/em> Randy Jackson, &#8220;It\u00a0wasn&#8217;t good\u00a0for me, dog.&#8221;\u00a0 Gimme Lean is a line of\u00a0substitute products for meat,\u00a0designed to\u00a0mimic the flavor and texture.\u00a0 This one even came in a\u00a0tube like ground beef sometimes comes in.\u00a0 It&#8217;s made primarily from water and textured soy protein, and to its credit, it\u00a0contains very few unnatural-sounding ingredients.\u00a0 We bought it not because we miss burgers\u00a0so much, but\u00a0because we miss tacos so much.\u00a0 Our at-home taco operation took a small hit when we started substituting ground turkey for ground beef, but since we went pescetarian we&#8217;ve been\u00a0<em>sin tacos <\/em>altogether.\u00a0 That&#8217;s Spanish by the way; I don&#8217;t believe the Church\u00a0has\u00a0yet established an official stance on tacos.<\/p>\n<p>So we used Gimme Lean for tacos, and the only thing I could\u00a0say was &#8220;Gimme something\u00a0different to eat.&#8221;\u00a0 I&#8217;d sooner eat no tacos than eat these again.\u00a0\u00a0The\u00a0meat-substitute\u00a0was slimy, weird tasting, and I won&#8217;t even start on what Erin thought it resembled in the pan.\u00a0 So Gimme\u00a0Lean didn&#8217;t do it for\u00a0us, and we\u00a0won&#8217;t buy it again.\u00a0 In fact, I&#8217;ll probably stay away from\u00a0anything\u00a0masquerading as\u00a0meat and just\u00a0stick to black beans for vegetarian tacos and burgers.<\/p>\n<p>As I&#8217;m finishing up this post, I&#8217;m smelling the seasoned plum tomatoes with garlic and oil that are roasting in the oven for tonight&#8217;s dinner.\u00a0 It&#8217;s\u00a0a new pasta recipe\u00a0that we made up\u00a0by combining two others.\u00a0 I think it will make a really hearty vegetarian meal.\u00a0 Check back tomorrow to see how it went and how you can make it this week!<\/p>\n<p>UPDATE:\u00a0 Instead of roasted tomato pasta tomorrow, there will be a surprise post!\u00a0 But not to worry, pasta will be up on Tuesday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A little change of pace for this Sunday afternoon, and something that I hope to do more of since we&#8217;re trying so many\u00a0different products as part of this new lifestyle.\u00a0\u00a0One is good, the other not so good (notice I\u00a0didn&#8217;t say &#8220;not so much,&#8221;
