{"id":25815,"date":"2015-08-05T15:47:29","date_gmt":"2015-08-05T19:47:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/?p=25815"},"modified":"2020-04-09T14:20:48","modified_gmt":"2020-04-09T18:20:48","slug":"no-guarantee","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/no-guarantee\/","title":{"rendered":"Stop Waiting for a Guarantee"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Every few weeks, I get a message on Twitter or other social media like this one:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nomeatathlete\">@NoMeatAthlete<\/a> Curious about a plant-based diet, but worried about how it will affect my recovery from long rides. Thoughts?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Yes, I have some thoughts. And they don\u2019t fit into 140 characters. Here goes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sometimes, you just need to try things. Without a guarantee that they\u2019ll work.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d actually be more sympathetic if you were worried about dropping dead on the spot from a lack of protein. Sudden death isn\u2019t reversible and isn\u2019t gradual, so you\u2019d be right to want to confirm that it\u2019s not a risk before diving in.<\/p>\n<p>But feeling a little sluggish when you get on the bike? Noticing, after a month maybe, that your times are dropping off? Unless you&#8217;re a pro athlete, none of this is\u00a0cataclysmic.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m not saying that will or won\u2019t happen. Nobody can say that for sure. A\u00a0lot of athletes choose this diet precisely <em>because<\/em> of what it does for their recovery &#8230; but it&#8217;s totally possible that for whatever reason, it just won\u2019t work out for you.<\/p>\n<p>And what then?<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Not disaster! You either tweak your diet and keep trying, or you go back to whatever you were eating before.\u00a0Nothing\u00a0goes suddenly, surprisingly, and irreversibly wrong.<\/p>\n<p>But when you try something new &#8212; even if it doesn\u2019t work out and you go back in a month &#8212; you&#8217;ve gained something.<\/p>\n<p>First, you gave yourself the chance of discovering something that works really well and changes your whole life. If it doesn&#8217;t, it&#8217;s as if somebody gave you a (free) lottery ticket that didn&#8217;t happen to turn out a winner.<\/p>\n<p>But unlike that lottery ticket, trying something new comes with consolation prizes.<\/p>\n<p>In this case, you gave yourself a month of trying new foods, maybe found a new restaurant. You gained new perspective when you learned about another way of cooking, going to barbecues, ordering from a restaurant menu.\u00a0Maybe you even learned something new about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/vegetarian-protein\/\">protein<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/iron-for-vegetarians\/\">iron<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/b12-for-vegans\/\">B12<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Most importantly, you gained the experience of doing something unfamiliar, something that wasn&#8217;t as easy as standing still. And learning, if it didn&#8217;t work out, that &#8220;failing&#8221; isn&#8217;t so bad.<\/p>\n<p>This isn&#8217;t about veganism. I&#8217;d say the same stuff to someone stressing over Paleo, in fact.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not even a diet thing. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/marathon-roadmap-3-0\/\">Marathon training<\/a>? <a href=\"https:\/\/zenhabits.net\/blog-foundation\/\">Starting a blog<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/no-meat-athlete-radio\/id476196931?mt=2\">podcast<\/a>? Going back to school? The same applies to all of those.<\/p>\n<p>So why, then, don&#8217;t we all try these things?<\/p>\n<p>Because we&#8217;re afraid. Of the uncertain. Of failing. Of looking silly.<\/p>\n<p>And I get it. Change is risky, and where you are is safe.<\/p>\n<p>But maybe \u201ccomfortable\u201d is the better word.\u00a0Because one day, a day that&#8217;s impossibly far off but a day that\u2019s coming nonetheless, you&#8217;ll look back one last time at all the things you did &#8230; and remember all the things you didn&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Safe&#8221; is risky. Because comfort, it turns out, is addictive.<\/p>\n<p>Stop looking for a guarantee; you\u2019re not going to get it.
