{"id":22517,"date":"2014-04-27T19:04:33","date_gmt":"2014-04-27T23:04:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/?p=22517"},"modified":"2019-11-13T12:56:00","modified_gmt":"2019-11-13T17:56:00","slug":"not-secret-secrets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/not-secret-secrets\/","title":{"rendered":"The Not-So-Secret Secrets to Succeeding at Anything"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A few months ago, Rich Roll wrote a great post called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.richroll.com\/lifehack\/why-you-should-stop-lifehack-and-invest-in-the-journey\/\">Why You Should Stop Lifehacking and Invest in the Journey<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As I read the post, I found myself nodding along, as expected. When I look at the biggest accomplishments of my life so far, it&#8217;s clear that shortcuts had little to do with them.<\/p>\n<p>How about you? Look at what you\u2019re most proud of in your life, and you\u2019ll surely find that hacks weren\u2019t the reason you did it.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not that \u201chacks\u201d &#8212; in fitness, diet, business, whatever &#8212; aren\u2019t valuable. It\u2019s absolutely worth learning the tricks and the insights that will help you make quantum leaps along the way. Soak up every bit of knowledge you can about what you\u2019re trying to do &#8230; and that includes the hacks.<\/p>\n<p>But when a hack works &#8212; and not just for a day or a week, but for good &#8212; it\u2019s usually because it comes on top of a foundation of fundamentals that you&#8217;ve&nbsp;practiced for years.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s those fundamentals that the internet hackarazzi ignores.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Because the fundamentals aren\u2019t exciting. But they\u2019re real, and nonnegotiable.<\/p>\n<h3>How then, do you set up the game so that you\u2019ll actually <em>do<\/em> the fundamentals?<\/h3>\n<p>In the past five years, I\u2019ve accomplished three goals that I\u2019m extremely proud of, goals that were unreasonable when I set them and were laughed at when I told others about my plans:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/boston-marathon-qualifying\/\">Qualifying for Boston<\/a> with a 3:09:59 marathon, after my first marathon took me 4:53:41.<\/li>\n<li>Running a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/100-mile-ultramarathon-report\/\">100-mile ultramarathon<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.copyblogger.com\/case-study-matt-frazier\/\">Building<\/a> my little blog into a job that\u2019s exciting, that\u2019s meaningful, and that pays the bills and provides the flexibility to live in a way that makes me happy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If I look at those accomplishments, I can find three common elements that made them all happen, and that made the fundamentals not just bearable but fun.<\/p>\n<p>Here are the three &#8220;secrets,&#8221; if you can call them that (hey, it&#8217;s more accurate than hacks, because they&#8217;re certainly not that):<\/p>\n<p>1. <strong>Get clear on your goal and become certain you\u2019re going to do it.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>People will say you\u2019re insane until you actually do it. That&#8217;s actually a good sign.<\/p>\n<p>Make sure you\u2019re ridiculously excited about your goal. Write it down. Then do what it takes to convince yourself that you can do it, you will do it, and that you must do it.<\/p>\n<p>2. <strong>Be in it for the long haul.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a great quote from the book <em>The Slight Edge<\/em>, by Jeff Olson, about what it takes to be successful in general:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In the course of my businesses I&#8217;m often approached by people wanting to know the secret to success, the magic formula. \u2018What&#8217;s the one thing I can do,\u2019 they&#8217;ll say, \u2018to guarantee my success?\u2019 My answer is always the same: \u2018Be here, actively immersed in the process, one year from now.\u2019 That&#8217;s really the only right answer.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Yep. I\u2019d add \u201cbe okay with failing.\u201d Because during that long haul, you&#8217;ll do it a lot.<\/p>\n<p>3. <strong>Get&nbsp;obsessed.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Balance. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/the-great-moderation-hoax\/\">Moderation<\/a>. These words appeal to the mainstream; they sound wholesome and sustainable.<\/p>\n<p>But I didn\u2019t practice moderation to get to Boston. I read ten different running books, paid to be a member of a fitness site (Core Performance, back in the early days of membership sites), went three months without a sip of alcohol before one race, and repeatedly got myself to <em>literally cry<\/em>&nbsp;tears of joy during training, when I would visualize during runs exactly what it would look and feel like to catch that first glimpse of the finish line, with enough time left on the clock for me to qualify.<\/p>\n<p>I set goals, over and over, and kept journals filled with what no doubt look like a madman&#8217;s ravings about how I WOULD qualify for Boston, no matter what. I listened to motivational stuff during every commute to grad school, most commonly a 30-day audio program (Personal Power) to become mentally stronger.<\/p>\n<p>Many days, qualifying for Boston was all I could think about. After a run, I couldn&#8217;t wait for the next day &#8230; so that I could go for another run.<\/p>\n<p>Which reminds me: all that stuff above was outside of the training itself, which, especially during the last two years, was the hardest and most time-consuming part of it all.<\/p>\n<p>As for this job that I&#8217;m so grateful to have: I probably don&#8217;t need to tell you that I didn&#8217;t create it by practicing balance and moderation. I\u2019ve happened to do more interviews for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneuronfire.com\/podcast\/matt-frazier-interview-and-john-lee-dumas-of-entrepreneur-on-fire\/?utm_source=rss&amp;utm_medium=rss&amp;utm_campaign=matt-frazier-interview-and-john-lee-dumas-of-entrepreneur-on-fire\">entrepreneurship podcasts<\/a> and sites recently, and when they ask, \u201cWhat\u2019s the difference between people who succeed in starting online businesses and those who don\u2019t?\u201d there\u2019s just one answer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>That difference, in a word, is obsession. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If when you start a new business you <em>don\u2019t<\/em> think about it every waking moment, <em>don\u2019t<\/em> read every good article you can find, <em>don\u2019t<\/em> go to conferences to build relationships, <em>don\u2019t<\/em>&nbsp;sacrifice time, money, and energy to invest in the business \u2026 then really, what the heck are you doing?<\/p>\n<p>To do anything else strikes me as bizarre.<\/p>\n<p>I talk a lot about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/big-goals-easy-steps\/\">big, \u201cunreasonable\u201d goals<\/a>. Their power is that they\u2019re exciting. They create energy. They\u2019re the last thing you think about at night and the first you think about in the morning.<\/p>\n<p>But if you aren\u2019t willing to obsess over them, you\u2019re wasting your time. That\u2019s the whole point of setting your goals so big.<\/p>\n<p>The very nature of all-consuming obsession is that you can\u2019t do it about very many things. So pick the three &#8212; or better, <em>the one<\/em> &#8212; that\u2019s really worthy of your time and energy for the next few months or years.<\/p>\n<p>Then go make it happen. Whatever it takes.<\/p>\n<p>As for balance? Moderation? I say leave them for other people &#8230; or at least for later.
