{"id":13848,"date":"2011-05-13T12:19:08","date_gmt":"2011-05-13T16:19:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/?p=13848"},"modified":"2020-04-14T10:48:30","modified_gmt":"2020-04-14T14:48:30","slug":"before-going-vegetarian","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/before-going-vegetarian\/","title":{"rendered":"Before You Go Vegetarian, Think About This"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Note: This is a guest post from Emily Levenson, who writes <a href=\"https:\/\/emilylevenson.com\/\">{Custom Made} Life<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>You wouldn&#8217;t sign up for a marathon and run it the next day, would you?<\/p>\n<p>Of course not.\u00a0 Instead, you&#8217;d select your goal, plan your training, and work your way up to the big day.\u00a0 That way when race day comes, you&#8217;re ready, and you own those 26.2 miles.<\/p>\n<p>You should treat going vegetarian the same way.<\/p>\n<h3>Why do you want to go vegetarian?<\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-32005\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/iStock_000012945279XSmall.jpg\" alt=\"Girl ponders life while holding basket of fruit\" width=\"309\" height=\"205\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/iStock_000012945279XSmall.jpg 425w, https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/iStock_000012945279XSmall-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 309px) 100vw, 309px\" \/>Of course the obvious reasons of why you&#8217;re making the switch are important:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>For the environment<\/li>\n<li>For your health<\/li>\n<li>For the animals<\/li>\n<li>For your family<\/li>\n<li>For the challenge<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Whatever your reasons are, they are your own. The longer you stick with a plant-based diet, the more those reasons will evolve.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Unfortunately, most people don\u2019t have this patience.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><!--more--><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>They sprint into a vegetarian diet, then beat themselves up because they cannot sustain such a change.<\/p>\n<p>Worse, they fall into the junk-food vegetarian trap. Just because you\u2019re not eating meat does <em>not<\/em> mean that french fries, deep-fried tofu and fake meat alternatives are healthy.<\/p>\n<h3>It\u2019s about more than just <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>wanting<\/em><\/span> to be vegetarian<\/h3>\n<p>Some other things to consider as you are making the switch:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Is cutting out meat (and other animal products like eggs and dairy) cold turkey the best option for you?<\/li>\n<li>How will you handle the often intrusive questions from others?<\/li>\n<li>How will you deal with cravings for your favorite non-vegetarian foods (bacon, anyone)?<\/li>\n<li>Do you have people to support you and help you navigate through the misinformation?<\/li>\n<li>What on earth are you going to eat now?!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The more energy you put into planning for this life change, the more successful you will be in the end. And the healthier you will be in the process.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You\u2019re not alone.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The good news is that internet and social media make it easier than ever to get advice from vegetarians and vegans who were once in your shoes.\u00a0 To get a glimpse of what lies ahead, check out what these awesome Twitter friends had to say when asked what they wished they had known when making the switch to a vegetarian diet:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>@gorideyourbike<\/strong> That Caesar dressing and Worcestershire sauce aren&#8217;t vegetarian (although you can find some vegetarian Caesar dressings)<\/p>\n<p><strong>@redpenmama<\/strong> I wish someone had told me that the second-guessing and &#8220;good natured&#8221; ribbing (on others&#8217; parts) never ends. You really need to have a sense of humor about it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>@PickMyBran<\/strong> Bacon is the most addictive food in the world.<\/p>\n<p><strong>@Morgan_Lua<\/strong> It&#8217;s not as hard as you think it will be. And your body adjusts to not even wanting the other food anymore.<\/p>\n<p><strong>@mangledweb<\/strong> I wish someone told me that there are other forms of veg protein besides beans and tofu. I might have converted sooner!<\/p>\n<p><strong>@JaciMalecki<\/strong> I wish I knew how to handle holidays (like upcoming Easter ham dinner)&#8230; is it rude if I bring my own food?<\/p>\n<p><strong>@DoseofCre8ivity<\/strong> How little stuff you can eat in restaurants that isn&#8217;t fried and\/or covered in cheese \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<p><strong>@noteasy2begreen<\/strong> That it doesn&#8217;t have to be an all-or-nothing scenario. You don&#8217;t need to hold yourself to someone else&#8217;s label.<\/p>\n<p><strong>@MyMindInspired<\/strong> I wish someone would have told me how hard it would be to resist meatloaf, and how important supplements are!<\/p>\n<p><strong>@crrome<\/strong> That people are forever asking &#8220;Why?&#8221; and trying to prove why (in their opinion) it&#8217;s a bad idea!<\/p>\n<p><strong>@HipsterSazzles<\/strong> I wish I knew how many people would still try to feed me poultry, because evidently, that&#8217;s vegetarian? &#8220;But it&#8217;s chicken!&#8221; no.<\/p>\n<p><strong>@PVLavender<\/strong> It gets better. In 1980 we had no boca burgers, no Morningside farms, no Amy&#8217;s. It got better &amp; it will keep getting better<\/p>\n<p><strong>@msjennylin<\/strong> I wish people understood the difference between dairy and eggs for those of us who can eat one but not the other.<\/p>\n<p><strong>@FriedChk2Tofu<\/strong> I wish someone had told me how many people would be offended at the fact that I don&#8217;t eat meat!<\/p>\n<p><strong>@teramc<\/strong> Easy: expect to gain weight! Thankfully, I now understand life beyond &#8220;just eat more carbs&#8221;!<\/p>\n<p><strong>@caralyngreen<\/strong> That processed faux-meat products are NOT the way.
