sizes=\"(max-width: 201px) 100vw, 201px\" \/><\/h3>\n<p>Upon hearing about the &#8220;fruitarian&#8221; movement, this was my reaction.\u00a0 I mean&#8230; eating 30 bananas a day!\u00a0 Is that healthy?\u00a0 Is that safe?\u00a0 Would I ever be able to poop again!?<\/p>\n<p>After the initial shock wore off I became intrigued. \u00a0I had questions\u2026 lots of questions. \u00a0So I dove in and learned everything I could about fruitarianism. \u00a0Here\u2019s what I found out.<\/p>\n<h3>Fruitarianism in a nutshell<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Eat as much raw, preferably organic, fruit as you want<\/li>\n<li>The &#8220;golden ratio&#8221; is 80% carbohydrates, 10% protein, and 10% fats, or 80\/10\/10, while a traditional &#8220;healthy&#8221;\u00a0diet is composed of 40% carbohydrates, 40% protein, and 20% fats (40\/40\/20)<\/li>\n<li>Milk and cheese are considered poison<\/li>\n<li>Not the same as a typical raw diet, which averages 60% fat<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>So I would really be eating nothing but fruit?<\/h3>\n<p>Pretty much. \u00a0Raw vegetables are occasionally welcome too, but the bulk of your calories must be fruit to maintain the desired 80\/10\/10 ratio. \u00a0Certain fatty fruits (avocados for example) should also be eaten in moderation.<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/lovecomplement.com\/?utm_source=nma&amp;utm_campaign=home&amp;utm_medium=in_post_graphic&amp;utm_content=fruitarian-diet\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-44868\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/our-sup-nma-below-post-v2-1000px.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/our-sup-nma-below-post-v2-1000px.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/our-sup-nma-below-post-v2-1000px-300x180.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/our-sup-nma-below-post-v2-1000px-768x461.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/our-sup-nma-below-post-v2-1000px-150x90.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><\/h3>\n<h3>I can\u2019t eat anything else?<\/h3>\n<p>Nope, sorry.<\/p>\n<h3>Not even seeds and nuts!?<\/h3>\n<p>No, but don\u2019t view the simplicity of this lifestyle as a negative. \u00a0It\u2019s is a good thing. \u00a0It\u2019s a lot easier to pack a bag of fruit on your way out the door than preparing \u201ctraditional\u201d meals.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You can even put down that bottle of water.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>No Meat Athletes are health conscious and surely know the benefit of drinking lots of water. \u00a0But get this\u2026 if you eat a fruitarian diet and aren\u2019t exercising in super hot conditions, you don\u2019t need to drink any additional water. \u00a0All the water you need is built right into the fruit&#8212;that\u2019s both convenient and green!<\/p>\n<h3>Isn\u2019t that way too much sugar?<\/h3>\n<p>Don\u2019t confuse the natural sugar found in fruits (fructose) with refined sugar (sucrose). \u00a0Contrary to popular belief, sugar isn\u2019t the devil and many claim it\u2019s impossible to get too much sugar while eating whole, fresh fruit.<\/p>\n<h3>What about bone density and calcium?<\/h3>\n<p>It is not how much calcium you consume that is important, but how much you lose through neutralizing acids that come from eating high amounts of protein and starch. \u00a0Reducing or eliminating the high protein intake leads to decreased calcium loss.<\/p>\n<h3>What about protein?<\/h3>\n<p>C\u2019mon, seriously? \u00a0You didn\u2019t just ask me about protein did you?<\/p>\n<p>I guess you missed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/vegetarian-protein-primer\/\">this post<\/a> that explains it much better than I ever could. \u00a0The short and sweet of it is that our perceptions on protein requirements are out of whack and Americans eat way too much.<\/p>\n<p>Fruit averages 6% protein, so as long as you are eating enough calories in fruit then you are getting enough protein, even if you&#8217;re an endurance athlete.<\/p>\n<h3>That\u2019s all fine and good in theory, but people can\u2019t thrive on just fruit.<\/h3>\n<p>Let me tell you about a runner by the\u00a0name of\u00a0Michael Arnstein.\u00a0\u00a0Michael is an accomplished marathoner with a PR of 2:28.29\u00a0(2010 Boston Marathon).\u00a0 That&#8217;s a 5:40 pace for 26.2 miles!\u00a0 Yeah, he&#8217;s fast.\u00a0 Not only is he a fruitarian\u2026 he is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefruitarian.com\/\">the Fruitarian<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A practicing fruitarian for over three years, Michael eats nothing but lots of fruit and the occasional raw vegetable.\u00a0 Arnstein said he devours 30 pounds of fruit a day&#8212;as many as 30 oranges, five cantaloupes, a watermelon, and a salad with five pounds of tomatoes. \u00a0Consuming\u00a040\u00a0to 50 bananas\u00a0a day is a\u00a0common occurrence\u00a0for him.\u00a0 He also claims that\u00a010 to 15 Valencia oranges is the perfect post run snack.<\/p>\n<p>If Arnstein, who sometimes runs over 200 miles in a week, hasn\u2019t found this diet to be deficient in any way, then I highly doubt others will. \u00a0I mean c\u2019mon\u2026 he&#8217;s 4% body fat and faster than a speeding bullet!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lovecomplement.com\/products\/complement-plus-smart-vegan-capsules\/?utm_source=nma&amp;utm_campaign=cplus&amp;utm_medium=in_post_graphic&amp;utm_content=fruitarian-diet\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-43846\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/comp-plus-ingredients-v3-1024x640.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/comp-plus-ingredients-v3-1024x640.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/comp-plus-ingredients-v3-300x188.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/comp-plus-ingredients-v3-768x480.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/comp-plus-ingredients-v3-1536x960.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.nomeatathlete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/comp-plus-ingredients-v3.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Here\u2019s some more food for thought.<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Humans are not carnivores (this shouldn\u2019t be a hard sell to the No Meat Athlete crowd)<\/li>\n<li>The high protein Standard American Diet (SAD) is making us fatter and sicker than ever<\/li>\n<li>Long-lived cultures\u00a0eat high carbs and low fat (Abkhasia of Russia, Vilcabamba of Ecuador, and Hunza of Pakistan)<\/li>\n<li>Occurrences of obesity, heart disease, cancer, and diabetes can all be reduced through 80\/10\/10<\/li>\n<li>Even white sugar does not result in out-of-control children if the dietary fat is low<\/li>\n<li>Most Type-2 diabetics produce plenty of insulin, but dietary fats hinder its function<\/li>\n<li>No extra protein is required for physical activity (endurance athletes included)<\/li>\n<li>Weight gain\u00a0seems eminent on such a carb heavy diet, but\u00a0fruitarians average 3-6% body fat<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Okay, enough already! \u00a0I\u2019m sold! \u00a0How do I get started?<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>The Fruitarian has a great post, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefruitarian.com\/content\/taking-leap-fruitarian-transition-tips\">Taking the Leap \u2013 Fruitarian Transition Tips<\/a>, to get the ball rolling.<\/li>\n<li>Get your hands on a copy of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/80-10-Diet\/dp\/1893831248\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1293548861&amp;sr=1-1\">The 80\/10\/10 Diet: Balancing Your Health, Your Weight, and Your Life One Luscious Bite at a Time<\/a> by Dr. Douglas Graham. \u00a0This will be your bible.\u00a0 Please note that the use of the word &#8220;diet&#8221; in the title is misleading.\u00a0 What Dr.\u00a0Graham is proposing in this book\u00a0is a lifestyle and mindset.\u00a0 He uses hard\u00a0science to make his case\u00a0and does a damn good job.<\/li>\n<li>Join the folks over at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.30bananasaday.com\/\">30 Bananas A Day<\/a>. \u00a0Their fruitarian forum offers a tremendous support system full of experienced hard-core fruitarians.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>And one more thing&#8230;<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Get ready for lots of unsolicited health advice.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When you go to the supermarket and fill your shopping cart to the top with bananas, you will get a ton of\u00a0odd looks and inquiries.\u00a0 I just tell people that I have a pet monkey at home and that seems to make them happy.<\/p>\n<h3>Is Fruitarianism for you?<\/h3>\n<p><em>Let&#8217;s turn
