I have experienced most of these myths at school, especially #3 and #5. However, instead of being asked where I get my protein, kids at school ask “well, then what do you eat?” I suppose teenagers have different priorities than adults. Here’s how a conversation will normally go when it comes up that I’m vegetarian (from now on I’ll just show people this article):

Question 1: What do you eat?
(I normally list my meals for the day.) Today: Breakfast- berry smoothie with almond milk and yogurt. Lunch- salad and leftover mushroom ravioli. Dinner- ratatouille.

Question 2: Do you want to try meat?
No, I have no desire to eat a dead animal.

Question 3: Why not?
For one, my digestive system wouldn’t be able to handle meat because I’ve never eaten any. But mainly ethical and environmental reasons.

Then they’ll go on to tell me that they couldn’t imagine “giving up” meat, or that they tried being vegetarian for a week (honestly, does that even count?), or that I won’t be able to survive without meat, or list some foods and ask me if they’re vegetarian. When this happens, I just ask, “is that made of an animal?” and all of a sudden the person’s mind is blown. It’s really shocking that so many children and teenagers don’t know what vegetarianism/ veganism is. This article will really help me the next time my vegetarianism comes up and I think I’ll just keep a copy of it with me.
